Hormone Balancing

Humans have been described as “a wet bag of hormones” and to a large extent this is true. Hormones are information messengers, telling the cells what needs to be done for good health. Sometimes the messages get confused, and symptoms such as fatigue and irritability occur.

Women particularly have an intricate and complex dance between their ovarian (menstrual) hormones, thyroid (energy and weight) hormones, and adrenal (stress/ immune system) hormones. These three major hormonal systems are individually integral to good health, and interact and support each other.

Brain function and mood regulating chemicals rely on these systems to function normally. When imbalance occurs, a woman’s wellbeing at all levels can be severely disrupted.

Little wonder weight and energy starts to fluctuate, menstrual disorders occur, and mood and memory disorders, irritability and difficulty coping with normal life begin to take on significance.

The problem is that often there is no disease here, rather a hormonal imbalance. Conventional medicine loves disease, but can’t cope with imbalance, hence the tendency to prescribe anti-depressants to women with such symptoms.

With careful evaluation and appropriate functional testing, it is possible to substantially improve and even resolve such imbalances with non-drug therapies.

Most commonly there tends to be an excess of oestrogens, inadequate progesterone, low normal levels of thyroid hormones and low levels of cortisol (stress) hormone. Progesterone declines with age, and yet is important in thyroid and adrenal hormone production, serotonin production-a mood stabilizing chemical, and collagen formation to keep skin youthful.

This declining progesterone level is a major hormonal player in a woman’s wellbeing, yet its importance is not sufficiently recognised by conventional medicine. Additionally, liver and gut function are important to effective hormone detoxification. It is sometimes necessary to further study these areas with specific functional testing.

It is true to say if our liver and gut function is sluggish, not surprising in our chemically laden society, then we inturn will be sluggish. Most of our problems stem not so much from disease but dysfunction. Correct the dysfunction and many diseases can be avoided.
