What is IPL Hair Removal?

IPL hair removal is a method of removing hair using a light known as an IPL or ‘intense pulsed light’. IPL is not a laser, but a broad-spectrum light that is pulsed onto the skin.

Using a selected filter, the light scatters under the surface of the skin and is absorbed by the pigment in the hair follicle, the light energy heats up the hair follicle and destroys it. After several treatments, the hair follicle is so weak that it simply does not grow back.

Hair on the face and body has three stages of development.

Anagen – The growing phase
Catagen – The transition phase
Telogen – The resting phase

IPL hair removal is only effective on hair that is in the Anagen stage, which means treatments must be at intervals of between 4 to 8 weeks, to maximise the number of follicles that are susceptible to being destroyed by the heat energy.

Permanent hair reduction can be achieved on most parts of the body using IPL hair removal, including chest, back, arms, legs, bikini line and face.

The Procedure for IPL Hair Removal

During the IPL hair removal procedure, you will be required to wear protective eyewear, and these will be provided by your specialist.

The area to be treated is shaved, and a gel is applied to the skin. Highly controlled pulses of light are selectively absorbed by hair-follicles lying below the surface of the skin. The absorbed light heats the hair, which damages or destroys the regrowth potential of the follicle. All without damaging the surrounding tissue.

IPL hair removal can be used for all types and colours of hair whether they are white, red, grey, brown, black or blonde hair, and can be coupled with Meladine for improved results.

The Healing Process after IPL hair removal treatment

Quick warm showers are recommended after IPL hair removal treatment. If areas treated other than the facial area, hot baths are not advised for 24 hours.

Cold packs, aloe vera or any other cooling preparation may be used to ease temporary discomfort.

Prolonged sun exposure is to be avoided for 4 weeks before treatment and then for the following 3 weeks. A total sunblock, not sunscreen, should be applied if it is impossible to comply.
