Micro-Otoplasty (also known as ear surgery, pinning ears or correction of prominent ears)

What does this operation entail?
An otoplasty is an operation that aims to reduce the prominence of the ears. Traditionally this required hospitalisation, wearing of bulky dressings and a prolonged recovery. A newer technique called a micro-otoplasty is less invasive and has fewer risks and more rapid recovery - however it is not suitable for all patients.

Because the incisions and surgery are less invasive, this variation of the technique should only be offered to patients who want a small reduction in the prominence of one or both ears. Patients who have very prominent ears and require a high degree of correction should consider the more traditional technique..

What type of anaesthetic is required?
Most patients are very comfortable having just local anaesthetic. This means small injections are used to numb the parts of the ear that are operated on. Sometimes tablets are given to relax anxious patients; if this is the case you cannot drive home because of the reduction in your alertness.

What type of scars would I expect to have?
Incisions are 2 or 3 mm long and generally heal almost without a scar.

What is the recovery like?
Most patients can go back to work the next day, but it is important to wear a headband to protect the ears during the day and during sleep. The headband is removed after a week and only worn if there is risk of bumping the ears.

Is this a risky operation?
In general it is not a particularly risky operation, but it does present the same types of potential complications as any operation - bleeding, infection, scarring, reaction to the anaesthetic or medications, asymmetry (one side being noticeably different from the other), cosmetic result and pain. The vast majority of patients are very happy with the result. Some need to have one or more further small procedures to improve the end result, as with any operation. It is normal to have a difference between sides of the body - we are all asymmetrical and imperfect before any operation and this will be the case afterwards.

Is there a Medicare rebate?
For some people there may be a Medicare rebate applicable; this can be determined during your consultation with Dr Topchian.

What if I have more questions?

Not all patients are suitable for this procedure, and a consultation is required to assess your suitability, medical history and general health & fitness, and to allow you to discuss the procedure including risks and complications with Dr David Topchian. Any surgical or invasive procedure carries risks. Before proceeding, you should seek a second medical opinion.
